Graphic design is the practice of visual communication. Designs typically involve typography, visual arts, layout and composition. The following are common types of graphic design. Graphic design uses visual compositions to solve problems and communicate ideas through typography, imagery, color and form. There’s no one way to do that, and that’s why there are several types of graphic design, each with their own area of specialization.

Graphics and compositions for advertising such as the ads in a magazine. Advertising design refers to creating and organizing the visual artwork used in the advertisements for product and services. Advertising can be seen everywhere in the form of billboards, television, wall paintings, etc. Designers can specialize in a specific type of media (vehicle wraps or magazine ads, for example) or create a broad assortment of collateral for print, digital, and beyond. Graphic Design is an art or skill of combining text & pictures in advertisements or magazines. While advertising designers are the people who create advertising campaigns. Environmental Graphic Design

Environmental Graphic Design is a discipline that encompasses different elements of graphic design, architecture, interior design, landscape design, and industrial design. RSM Design uses a multidisciplinary approach to communicate branded stories and bring them to life in the built environment. Many of us must be relating this with mother earth, green initiatives or saving the planet. But the fact is it has nothing to do with any of them. Environmental graphic design, also known as experimental graphic design or simply EGD, is communicating a story by combining various elements such as color, material, pattern, etc. with the architectural features of the brand. The main aim is to connect the people to places and make their experience memorable, informative or easier to navigate. Examples of environmental graphic design: Signage, Wall murals, Office branding, Retail store interiors etc.

Visual Graphic Design

Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography and illustration. The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term “graphic design” is used synonymously. A brand is a relationship between a business or organization and its audience. A brand identity is how the organization communicates its personality, tone and essence, as well as memories, emotions and experiences. Designers that specialize in visual identity graphic design collaborate with brand stakeholders to create assets like logos, typography, color palettes and image libraries that represent a brand’s personality. The visual elements of brand identity that act as the face of a brand to communicate those intangible qualities through images, shapes and color.

UI Graphic Design

The graphical user interface is presented (displayed) on the computer screen. It is the result of processed user input and usually the primary interface for human-machine interaction. The touch user interfaces popular on small mobile devices are an overlay of the visual output to the visual input. User interface design (UI) or user interface engineering is the design of user interfaces for machines and software, such as computers, home appliances, mobile devices, and other electronic devices, with the focus on maximizing usability and the user experience. The goal of user interface design is to make the user’s interaction as simple and efficient as possible, in terms of accomplishing user goals (user-centered design).

Good user interface design facilitates finishing the task at hand without drawing unnecessary attention to itself. Graphic design and typography are utilized to support its usability, influencing how the user performs certain interactions and improving the aesthetic appeal of the design; design aesthetics may enhance or detract from the ability of users to use the functions of the interface.[1] The design process must balance technical functionality and visual elements (e.g., mental model) to create a system that is not only operational but also usable and adaptable to changing user needs.

Interface design is involved in a wide range of projects from computer systems, to cars, to commercial planes; all of these projects involve much of the same basic human interactions yet also require some unique skills and knowledge. As a result, designers tend to specialize in certain types of projects and have skills centered on their expertise, whether that be software design, user research, web design, or industrial design. Examples of user interface graphic design: Web page design, Theme design, App design etc.

Publishing Graphic Design

Graphic designers use desktop publishing software and techniques to create the print materials they envision. Desktop publishing is the process of using the computer and specific types of software to combine text and graphics to produce documents such as newsletters, brochures, and books.  They have traditionally been a print medium. Think books, newspapers, magazines and catalogs. However, there’s recently been a significant rise in digital publishing. Publication designers may work as freelancers, as creative agency members or in-house as part of a publishing company. Examples of publishing graphic design: Books, Newspapers, Magazines, Annual reports etc.

Packaging is the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. Packaging also refers to the process of designing, evaluating, and producing packages. Packaging can be described as a coordinated system of preparing goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use. Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, informs, and sells. In many countries it is fully integrated into government, business, institutional, industrial, and personal use. Package labeling (American English) or labelling (British English) is any written, electronic, or graphic communication on the package or on a separate but associated label.

Motion graphic design is a subset of graphic design in that it uses graphic design principles in a filmmaking or video production context (or other temporally evolving visual medium) through the use of animation or filmic techniques. Simply put, motion graphics are graphics that are in motion. This can include animation, audio, typography, imagery, video and other effects that are used in online media, television and film. Motion graphics designers begin by developing storyboards and then bring their concepts to life with animation, video and traditional art. Now, motion graphics can be found across all digital platforms, which has created all sorts of new areas and opportunities. Examples of motion graphic design: Animated logos, Promotional videos, Tutorial videos, Video games, GIFs etc.

3D Graphic Design

3D computer graphics or three-dimensional computer graphics (in contrast to 2D computer graphics), are graphics that use a three-dimensional representation of geometric data (often Cartesian) that is stored in the computer for the purposes of performing calculations and rendering 2D images. Such images may be stored for viewing later or displayed in real-time. 3D graphic designing is gaining a lot of importance these days. It has become the most popular effects used in almost all the industries. It is an art of creating a design on the X-Y-Z scale (width, height, depth) which can be rotated and viewed from all the angles in real-time.

3D computer graphics are often referred to as 3D models. Apart from the rendered graphic, the model is contained within the graphical data file. However, there are differences: a 3D model is the mathematical representation of any three-dimensional object. A model is not technically a graphic until it is displayed. A model can be displayed visually as a two-dimensional image through a process called 3D rendering or used in non-graphical computer simulations and calculations. With 3D printing, 3D models are similarly rendered into a 3D physical representation of the model, with limitations to how accurate the rendering can match the virtual model.

For more complex, technical topics, companies want to convey their message in the simplest form. This is when they require the graphic design services of a 3D artist. The designers in this field posses a strong computer and technical skills.
